With all the comforts of home, Waiheke Island is close enough to town but just far enough away from the noise of the city. It’s time to commute in jandals, relax with the neighbours and then park all day at your favourite fishing spot.

From Matiatia Ferry Terminal to Auckland City is a pleasant 35-minute sailing or 30 minutes to Devonport with regular services. There are also regular car ferries from Kennedy Point to Half Moon Bay and Wynyard Quarter.

As soon as you step off the boat and on to the Island, you feel like you are somewhere special with its own relaxed island vibe. The beautiful beaches are a huge drawcard as well as around 30 wineries and vineyards, not to mention the quirky craft stores and art galleries that tell a story of the Island’s past.

The climate is slightly warmer than Auckland, with less humidity and rain, and more sunshine hours.  This microclimate is perfect for growing grapevines, exploring beach coves and savouring al fresco dining.

Beaches

Waiheke Island, with its emerald coloured waters, has long been a favourite escape for city dwellers and tourists who are looking for some of the best beaches New Zealand has to offer – with white sands, safe swimming, plentiful fishing, great kayaking and paddle boarding, coastal walking tracks, picnicking areas and more.

The Island has a diverse range of beaches with the most popular being the north-facing larger beaches of Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi.  More quiet and sheltered spots include Little Oneroa, Shelly Beach, Sandy Bay and Enclosure Bay.

Vineyards

Rolling hills, sea breezes and plenty of sunshine define Waiheke’s world-famous wine region. There are around 30 boutique wineries, most with restaurants, tasting rooms and breath-taking views.

Since the 1980’s Waiheke has been best known for its production of high-quality red wines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  However, in more recent years, it has expanded its varietals to include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and more.
